Birthdays & Big Sur

Gratitude is surely the secret sauce of this life with God. I’ve long been convinced. And this week, as I continue my slow memorization of Colossians, it’s like an anthem on repeat. Here’s where I’ve been…

Above all, put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. And let the peace of Christ, to which you were also called in one body, rule your hearts. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Colossians 3:14-17)

be thankful

with gratitude

giving thanks

See what I mean? The secret sauce.

Yesterday as I meditated on Paul’s words, a daughter-in-law came to mind. Last weekend my son Luke and his wife Ali took flight from coast to coast to visit family, and to run a race. The Big Sur. A breathtaking jog along a California scenic highway. Later Ali described the race to me in a text message:

I had many moments of awe (near tears) while running this course! Such a privilege, being able to travel and race… I personally couldn’t stop smiling and looking at the views. It rained at the start and the hills were very challenging… but easily one of the more incredible running experiences I’ve had.

Ali’s text encouraged my heart in ways I may not adequately explain. I needed her words and her perspective, reminding me that life is all about moments of awe and awareness of privilege regarding things we might otherwise take for granted.

This has been my own anchor during months of uncertainly regarding the sale of our house. How many times have I fought against worry and fatigue by reminding my soul to be GRATEFUL?!

Hallelujah!

My soul, praise the Lord.

I will praise the Lord all my life;

I will sing to my God as long as I live.

Psalm 46:1-2

God, forgive me for all the times I fail to give thanks. I have so very much for which to be grateful!

Two of my daughters-in-law (Brina and Kiana) are celebrating birthdays this week. These two who, by week’s end, will be living as neighbors! And as I selected the right cards and jotted notes of celebration, I was reminded again of my cup running over family of blessings. Me… who years ago was foolish enough to doubt the love of these daughters… now lavished.

I’ve been thinking, too, this week of our newest Mama. Sid is in the thick of it, nursing her newborn. The days are long but the years are short. To quote cliche. But there’s nobody more qualified to affirm this truth than Nana. Goodness. Watching these grandkids race through the years is no joke. May I cherish each moment with THANKS.

Last night at church we gathered with our small group and our brother Ettien made this statement in prayer:

God, thank you for the 10,000 things you’re doing—and for the 3 things we actually see!

lol. And no kidding.
